I got a real surprise recently…
Two separate women I think are bright and capable told me they have difficulty saying NO and speaking out at work when in male company. Make no mistake, THEY ARE bright and capable but the tribes into which they were born taught them a) to be compliant and b) not to be assertive around men.
So they were conditioned into these behaviours in order to survive in their particular family and culture. While that might sound a bit dramatic, organically it would have felt like an absolute imperative.
If you don’t fit in, you’re out…

When is it ever going to stop?
I’m somewhat long in the tooth. Love that phrase because it’s absolutely true. In later life your teeth rise out of your gums. Your ears get longer and the space between your nose and mouth gets longer too.
Who knew?
What doesn’t get longer is my patience with the ongoing inter-generational cycle of females being raised in deference to males.
OK… I know that doesn’t happen for all girls, or so I’m told. I’ve yet to meet a woman who hasn’t in some part been conditioned to fit in with our culture’s prevailing energy which is ‘the patriarchy.’
Why am I banging on about this again?
Because this deference causes us to be vulnerable to abuse of various kinds, rape and murder. Why? Because they can!
It’s called MISOGYNY…
‘hatred, dislike, or mistrust of women, manifested in various forms such as physical intimidation and abuse, sexual harassment and rape, social shunning and ostracism, etc.: the underlying misogyny in slut-shaming; Historically witch hunts were an embodiment of the misogyny of the time. Ingrained and institutionalized prejudice against women; sexism.’
Make no mistake, ‘the patriarchy’ also includes women who collude with it, who are misogynistic too. Yes, some really are! To be continued another time. For now, moving on…
Some politicians maintain we have sufficient laws under which the crimes committed against women can be charged. But they’re missing the point. Recognising misogyny as a hate crime means tougher measures can be taken to stamp it out and better protect women and girls.
