There are moments when a nation reaches a point where people, whether they verbalise it or not, know something has to change.
Not because absolutely everything is terrible, but mainly because what once worked no longer does.
It’s happening in our politics right now. And, unless there’s a last-minute challenge, it looks probable that Andy Burnham will be our next prime minister.
However, what many are responding to is something deeper than politics. They’re responding to the possibility of a new beginning.
H O P E!
The feeling that perhaps we don’t have to keep repeating the same patterns. Perhaps there’s a way forward that’s more nourishing, creative and hopeful than the one we’ve had.
It’s the same with the women with whom I work. From the outside, their lives often look successful. Career. Relationships. Home. Achievement.
But it’s very different inside… A bit lost, a bit bewildered, a bit I-didn’t-sign-up-for-this, and a bit ashamed that a life many would wish for feels flat, repetitive and mediocre.
They don’t need another freakin’ strategy, or another pop-psychology high that deflates in your face, or a 5-year plan!
They, just like the UK right now, need a little bit of hope.
The smallest, bravest thought that maybe things can be different.
That’s the moment everything changes. Not because life changes overnight, but because they do.
And they change because, for the first time in a long time, they can see the glimmer of a future they actually want to walk towards.
From what I know of Andy Burnham, his history and achievements, that’s what he gave Manchester: a positive vision and ways to achieve it. I’m willing him to do the same for our nation, to rebuff the divisiveness and hate peddled by some of our politicians.
H O P E isn’t naïve.
It’s the birthplace of courage.
And sometimes all it takes is one glimpse of a different future to begin the turnaround. I’m hoping he delivers that glimpse!
