I’ve had it with social media posts that propagate the idea that horrible things happening is necessary to clear the way for better things to take their place.

WTF!

Don’t these people watch the news?

War is hell on earth!

Yes, good and life-supportive things can emerge out of hell but who says we can’t create them without it?

Indeed, I think it’s time to bin the idea that ‘crisis’ in Chinese means danger AND opportunity!

Apparently, President Kennedy said it did in a speech once and it got turned into an urban myth. A myth that was certainly spread through the Neuro-Linguistic Programming courses I took back in the day… and probably still is!

Uh-uh… The word ‘crisis’ in Chinese only means danger. Not an opportunity in sight! In fact…

Our word ‘crisis’ comes from the Greek words ‘krisis.’ This originally meant a judgement or decision and, over time, came to mean crisis as a process of transformation where the old system can no longer be maintained.

In personal and spiritual growth, ‘crisis’ offers a time to separate from redundant ways of behaving and redundant states of being… the old system that can no longer be maintained.

Yet we hold onto old stuff long after it’s served us as if it were a life belt. Long after the time when it was the wisest and best thing you could have done when you had fewer resources than you do now.

We hold onto that old system partly because our body’s wired up bio-chemically for homeostasis; keeping things as they are. Yet our psycho-spiritual being calls out for healing, wholeness and evolution. And we ignore it at our peril.

I know the cost of not listening, of not embracing the discomfort and sometimes freakin’ agony when you’re being called to change. I returned to an unfulfilling and unhappy marriage when I was too shit-scared to go out there on my own.

The cost? Additional years of upset and depression.

So, if and when you’re next in a crisis situation, ask what am I being called to separate from? And separate from it. What needs to be jettisoned? And jettison it. What do I no longer need to carry? And stop carrying it.

Take heart…

Unlike ‘crisis,’ an ancient Chinese sage and philosopher, Lao Tzu, is very well documented as having said, ‘A journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step.’

And it does!
