Part of me screams, ‘What the feck has this got to do with spirituality?’
I’m writing about abortion and respect this might be too painful for you to read. If that’s so, please take care of yourself.
In the week the USA High Court judges over-turned Wade v Roe and voted in favour of each state to decide their position on abortion, I’m struggling to write about it.
And women should be writing about it and taking action. There’s so much about this that stinks of the patriarchy taking control of women’s bodies.
On the other hand, I never regret choosing against abortion when I look at my gorgeous son despite the hardships that lay in store.
But I wasn’t Ms Every Woman!
I wasn’t raped.
I wasn’t told the foetus inside me had zero chance of survival.
I wasn’t the mother of too many mouths to feed already.
I wasn’t in danger of dying myself.
I wasn’t out of my mind with fear and distress.
That it wasn’t right for me doesn’t mean it’s not right for another woman!
AND THAT’S WHERE THIS ISSUE IS TO DO WITH SPIRITUALITY!
For either side, pro or con, to force what’s right for them onto others is an act of violence. If we’re engaged with our spirituality, we see a bigger picture and can let the other walk their own path.
Strangely enough…
The complexity of this is such that what I’ve just written applies BOTH to the arguments of those ‘against’ abortion AND those who are ‘for’ it!
Ultimately, each one of us can only do what’s right for us at the time.
AND…
Each one of us always always does the best we can with the resources we have at any given moment.
Compassion springs from spirituality too!
Love and wild warm wishes…
