Snow freakin’ snow!

It’s not enough that we were baked within an inch of our lives this summer. Now we’re being shrivelled with minus-minus for good measure.

But, hey, that’s so much like life.

One not-so-good thing hits you and you adjust to coping with that thing. Then another not-so-good thing hits you and, while still adjusted by NSG thing number 1, you adjust in another way to cope with NSG thing number 2.

And then?

Along comes number 3 not-so-good thing!

And this last NSG thing is just the kind of thing to blow a fuse. It’s the last straw. It’s haven’t-I-done-enough-already? It’s this isn’t resilience building, it’s a nightmare!

For many, minus-minus on top of the cost of energy on top of the cost of living crisis in the UK is that thing…

It reminds me of Dr Zhivago (for those old enough to remember the film).

People togged up like walking blankets in the bleak Russian mid-winter, selling off whatever marketable items they owned for food, for rent… for just survival.

Am I exaggerating?

Not for those experiencing their own version of a Russian mid-winter.

So where’s the spirituality in that?

My logical mind says, ‘Beats the wotsits out of me!’

But when I remember some of my Russian mid-winters…

10 years old when I woke early to my parents’ voices and found my father with a suitcase… leaving… I can still see him going down the stairs to the front door… And the excruciating black months and years without him after that which I scarcely remember.

A single parent at 19 with no money to buy lunch at work or a new dress when I tried to dye my one of two and ruined it.

In my 40s, pills in one hand, glass of water in the other, when I was just holding on by my blood-torn fingernails and catapulted to the brink of suicide.

Where’s spirituality in that?

As Churchill religiously repeated to himself night and morning during the Second World War, ‘Keep buggering on!’

And I did.

Doesn’t mean to say I didn’t fall apart big-time, didn’t experience anxiety or terror like a mad thing muttering to myself in the park.

What it does mean is, like millions of others in very different ‘Russian mid-winters,’ you just keep going. Somewhere inside your determined Wild Soul pushes and shoves you until you get through whatever it is one way or another.

The urge for life, l’chaim, gives you the indomitable spirit to survive in the hope of favourable conditions ahead in which to evolve and flourish.

Such is the hope of the human soul.

Phew!

Didn’t know I was going to go from snow to the hope of the human soul but, hey, there it is, always. To be celebrated when you remember and to hold like the flame of a candle in the darkness because it will always but always see you through!

Love and wild warm wishes…
