Ernest Hemingway said, ‘Write hard and clear about what hurts.’
It seems to me that lots of us are hurting at the moment. If it’s not about the cost of living pressure, it’s about man’s inhumanity to man, or about a loss, or a slight, real or imagined, or a historic wounding or… … …
Finish the sentence with whatever’s your current hurt…
And then notice how your body feels.
As I typed that, I remembered what Rumi, a 13th-century Sufi philosopher, spiritual teacher, poet, and rebel once said.
Read it slowly-slowly so you take in all it points to…
‘I belong to no religion.
My religion is love.
Every heart is my temple.’
Notice how your body feels having now read Rumi’s quotation.
I’d wager one humongous bet on there being a qualitative difference between how your body felt the second time compared with the first.
Because the words we think, say, hear and read affect our reality every second, every moment, every NOW!
And, while some writers eloquently remind us of our hurt, it’s not always the healthy choice to embrace it.
For some old hurts, including ancient ones, run so deep the pain never really goes away.
We just learn to bear it better.
On Nelson Mandela’s passing, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon said Mandela ‘showed what is possible for our world and within each one of us – if we believe, dream and work together for justice and humanity.’
The quality that created Mandela’s vision for peace and reconciliation was the same as that which enables us to bear the pain of our old hurts better.
It’s none other than the magnificent and divine healing energy of Love!
If it could do that for post-apartheid South Africa, what could it do for your hurt, my hurt and even the swelling morass of humanity’s collective hurts?
I rest my case, woman!
I rest my case…
