The second full week of January in the UK has a particular feel to it.
By now, the glitter’s well swept away, although I have some glittering red stars still hanging from my light fittings😊 But, in general, the routines are back, and this recent icy cold snap of weather seems determined to test our resolve.
The novelty of a “new year” has worn thin, yet the illusory promise of real change… New Year, new life, new you, as if by magic… is being shown to be all smoke and mirrors.
And, for many midlife women, this is the week when things feel heavier, emotionally, mentally, even physically!
In our forties and fifties, January no longer feels like a clean slate. It feels more like a freakin’ mirror. And…
If you’re willing to sit still and quiet for long enough, it invites us to reflect… Is this it? Is this how I want to live my life?
Any children are back at school or grown and gone. Work has resumed its familiar same-old-same-old pace. Without December’s distractions, there’s nothing to soften the edges.
What’s left is you, your life, and the questions you might have been avoiding with seasonal busyness.
This week can stir up a low-grade restlessness that’s not dramatic enough to call a crisis, but persistent enough to be uncomfortable.
You might well find yourself feeling tired, de-motivated, and having an almost imperceptible grief for things lost, including yourself, or a subtle longing for something more, but you don’t know what.
This isn’t about you failing somehow. It’s about you becoming more aware of what’s going on inside of you.
In midlife, the second full week of January is not about pushing harder or fixing yourself. It’s about listening and noticing where you’re depleted, where you’re over-giving… where you’ve been surviving rather than living.
The winter asks us to slow down, not to leap ahead.
So, if you feel flat or uncertain this week, let that be information for your healing and growth rather than a problem to solve. Midlife transformation rarely arrives with fireworks but begins in these quieter moments.
It begins when you stop overriding your inner wisdom and start paying attention to it.
The second full week of January isn’t asking you to reinvent your life. It’s simply asking you to tell yourself the truth…
And from there, gently, something new can begin, woman.
Something new can begin…
