I’m not a tennis fan!

But…

On Sunday I caught the beginning of the Men’s Singles Finals at Wimbledon and was hooked!

It was an epic, what myths are made of. It was the King and the young buck challenger for his throne.

In case you don’t know, Djokovic is 36, rated the #2 men’s tennis player in the world and has won more championships than you can throw a stick at. The last time he lost a match was 10 years ago to Andy Murray.

Alcaraz is 20 and rated the #1 men’s tennis player in the world. Only having played a few times previously on grass (rather than clay, hard or artificial grass) the pundits predicted the old master, Djokovic, to win with no doubt!

So it seemed. He thrashed Alcaraz in the first game 6 sets to 1. Can you imagine having a master beat you at something so decisively? How would you feel?

Whatever Alcaraz felt, he came back like a lioness.

He took the next 2 games, beating the master 6 sets to 1 in one of them. Can you imagine having a young whipper-snapper beat you at something decisively? How would you feel?

I was enthralled watching these two engage with such determination, skill and art in their battle for supremacy. The supremacy of being the absolute best they could be within themselves as well as in their actions.

So well matched, their fortunes swung this way and that with Djokovic winning the 4th game … Two all!

I teetered on the edge of my chair and so did the crowd. They smelt blood and roared for the young pretender as loud as they did for the master. Whoever won the 5th game would be Wimbledon Champion; Djokovic his ninth or Alcaraz his first.

It was nail-biting. Each player won a set in turn until it was 5:4 to Alcaraz. This was it… So finely balanced that either Djokovic won the set to stay in the game or Alcaraz won the championship.

They played and the crowd went wild and so did I from my bouncing sitting room sofa. The King is dead! Long live the King!

Now, this is a very masculine story. Throughout nature, young bucks challenge mature elders for territory and the right to spread their DNA. So, had I been seduced by the dynamics of this, a passive female onlooker?

You bet I was BUT…

What kept me there was their magnificence, each living their potential as fully as they could, AND their awesome, awesome courage!

SHA-freakin-ZAM!
