A bird flew into my house this morning.
And I’m still shaking as I write.
There was a huge black bird in my garden, maybe a crow. When I went inside I heard a cacophony of squawking and, as I went back to look what was happening, a small bird flew right in through my wide-open kitchen door…
Oh no!
My home is open plan at the back of the house so it could have flown up into the bedrooms or bathroom!
Note to self: keep your freakin’ doors closed!
Luckily, it flew behind a stack of books in my sitting room… you know one of those student-like stacks on the floor… and cosied itself against the skirting board behind.
I gingerly pushed the stack closer to wedge it more securely, shoved on a pair of shoes and rushed round the corner to a neighbour.
It was 7.49 am and I was still in my pyjamas.
When there’s an emergency, who cares about appearances?
Luckily, Norman was watering his front garden and, within a few minutes, had picked the little bird up in his hands and released it into my garden where it soared away.
Phew-freakin’-phew!
And what a metaphor for us…
In its fear, the bird flew wherever it could to escape. When I peeked over the book stack it was just there, quiet and still.
Just like we can sometimes be when we fear something, being something or doing something… Nothing to see here!
What are we waiting for… Godot?
Well, yes, in a way!
Just as Norman’s careful hands held the bird and gave it its freedom, we hope for a ‘someone’ to rescue us or to arrange it for us or even do it for us.
AND…
No one can free you except yourself!
My fear of flying birds, particularly in the house, is a whole other story and, only now, after writing all this, has my anxiety subsided.
Phew!
AND…
The moral of the story is to have a Norman round the corner!
No, seriously…
The story’s moral is to hold yourself firmly and carefully when fearful. Then summon up the resources you need to overcome the thing, be the thing, do the thing whatever it is.
What have you been putting off that could give you more freedom?
Love and wild warm wishes…
