Avoid the news through whatever media source it comes from and on whatever appliances you use to receive it, especially now with war being stuffed down your throat.

Why?

Because it can be overwhelming and adversely affect your well-being, potentially leading to low mood, and/or anxiety, and/or problems with sleeping.

Only 100 years ago, people heard the news through newspapers, the radio, and telegrams, i.e., a message sent through the post office that ended up on a piece of paper delivered by a man on a motorbike to your front door.

The Bell Telephone Co. cornered the telephone market in 1877. However, 100 years ago, only the well-off could afford a telephone. Indeed, I remember our family not having one until 1960.

So, world news would generally come slowly. Even when it came fast, it was usually in the written or heard word and with static images so we were one step removed.

Ooo… except for Pathe News items which you’d see at the cinema along with whatever film you’d come to watch.

Unlike today, when we’re constantly exposed to grizzly and traumatising images, ducking symbolically with the journalist as sirens sound or bombs drop, or heart-wrenched as our screen is filled with starving and fly-ridden babies…

I wouldn’t be surprised if we weren’t all suffering from secondary traumatisation…

ENOUGH!

I encourage my depressed clients to avoid real-time news as it’s all bad and only fuels their condition. Now I’m encouraging all of us to avoid the news like the plague.

We’ll still read about it, or hear about it through conversations with other people, but, like 100 years ago, we’ll be one step away rather than flung with our whole being into the reality of it as if we were there.

We can habituate to the experience; we come to not notice the full-frontal attack of visual/auditory news. Just like victims of abuse, we can wisely numb out to the experience to be able to survive.

But I’d lay money on it that subconsciously we still get a psycho-emotional drubbing… As do victims of abuse.

So, avoid it like the plague if you can.

If you just can’t (yes, I like to know what’s going on in the world too) then seriously limit your exposure to it.

You’ll feel so much better when you do!

Love and wild warm wishes…
