All the ra-ra-ra fanfare on social media about the impending IWD has got to me. So, if you think it’s great we get to have a special celebration day, or not, read on…
I’m not doing International Women’s Day this year.
It’s tokenism!
Every year, we celebrate, we laud womanhood and being a woman but when the womanly love-in fest is over, everything goes back to normal.
And by normal, I mean “the patriarchy” rumbles on…
“A social system in which power is held by men, through cultural norms and customs that favour men and withhold opportunity from women.” (www.dictionary.com/browse/patriarchy)
Oh, come on, Sharon, women have plenty of opportunities these days!

Here are some facts from the World Economic Forum, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, 2019:
Women are 47% more likely to suffer severe injuries in car crashes because safety features are designed for men.
33,000 girls become child brides every day.
Women in rural parts of Africa spend 40 billion hours a year collecting water
It will take 108 years to close the gender gap.
Only 6 countries give women equal legal work rights as men.
22% of AI professionals are women – and it could be down to lack of confidence.
For every female film character, there are 2.24 men.
W T F!
Now, as you know, I don’t usually quote research as it can make dry reading. But if you think women have as big a bite of the cherry as men, perhaps you’ll think again.
Yes, I know the report’s five years old!
But…
If closing the gender gap will take 108 years, do you think much has changed since then?
International Women’s Day is also a marker to highlight where more work needs to be done in respect of DEI for women. I’m sure that gets highlighted year after year after year after year after year after year…
You get where I’m coming from?
Some might say, “Well, at least you get one day a year to highlight all these issues.”
Oh, pleeeeeeez…
Like I said, tokenism.
Sheer and unadulterated tokenism!
So, if I’m not doing IWD this year, what will I be doing? At the moment, I’m not sure. But if I do anything at all, you’ll be the first to know!
What I’m passionate about doing right now is happening tonight for when one or more women gather together, collective magic happens…
Always!
