Woman, here’s what nobody says loud enough to provoke a discussion, let alone change… and then some.
What I’ve been told time and time again, working with mature women, is that the moment you hit midlife, the culture stops looking at you and starts looking through you.
As if the very thing that makes you most potent, your lived experience, your hard-won clarity, your encroaching elderhood, has made you inconvenient somehow.
It could be associated with fertility at some primitive level. While men remain fertile and so relevant to the propagation of the species throughout their lives, when we women stop being fertile, we get sidelined.
It could be associated with low self-esteem and confidence. Even today, with the “Manosphere” alive and kicking, young girls and women are being conditioned to think they’re lesser than the walking god with two balls!
However, the patriarchy, misogyny and sexism in general do an excellent job of rubbing us out, let alone anything else!
For example, the business world doesn’t just largely ignore mature women; it actively erases us. The metrics of success are speed, noise, and performance… Everything that many women move beyond as we age.
And here’s what I know in my bones… You being visible is perceived as a threat by our culture.
You threaten a system that depends on women staying small, staying pleasing others, staying stuck in believing we’re somehow second-class. And the antidote isn’t to shout louder in rooms that weren’t built for you because they’re just not willing to listen.
The antidote is to build entirely different rooms!
